"APEX Scholars is an alternative admissions program designed to bridge the gap between high school and college. The program is based on the philosophy that students who are interested, committed, and willing to invest the time, can succeed academically when provided with appropriate support services.
The Mission:
APEX Scholars is to provide an academic bridge to the successful transition from high school to undergraduate studies at Wayne State University. In this quest, we will strengthen the cognitive abilities of students; encourage a thirst for knowledge; model and demand a disciplined approach to learning; and enhance student achievement by assuring access to a committed staff that provides effective supportive services, leading to a structured path of academic success.
Vision Statement:
APEX Scholars will be known by their ability, led by conscience, driven to succeed in the face of challenge, determined to serve others, and accomplish much with confidence and humility."
Being an APEX Bridge Program Tutor at Wayne State University
Since I am an English major, I primarily assist students by reviewing their papers and editing them along with them, pointing out areas that need clarity or, for example, why a sentence is grammatically incorrect. However, I assist in any subject the students need help in and hold Oral Communication workshops in which I teach the students how to brainstorm, research, and prepare for a speech that they must give. I also hold an essay workshop that works towards similar goals to help students feel less anxious about writing and completing essays for their classes (I have attached the workshop's agenda to show you a more specific example of what the students do).
The students I tutor are all mainly freshman in their first, second, or third semesters and I have already established first-name basis relationships with most of the ones that come to my study block times, which allows for a more welcoming environment they can feel safe to work in, something I find is extremely important, especially in college. I am in charge of maintaining the rules of a study lab computer room in the APEX lab, which is actually a room that most of the students favor and call "The Main Lab." The rules mainly consist of making sure nobody uses their cellphones, eats or drinks near the computer, and that the students are always working on something without disturbing their peers. I am also in charge of assisting students that ask for my help and for asking students if they need my help. I am also required to check their student planners to make sure they are properly filling them out with due dates and other important reminders to prepare them for their weekly meetings with their counselors who check their planners to sign that they are up to date.
When a student asks for help, I am required to submit tutor reports through an online program called GradesFirst which keeps track of students both through their class grades and if they are physically in the APEX lab in case I need to find them to ask about how an assignment is going. It lets me know how they're academically doing which allows me to understand where they are and where they need to be so I can help them get there. The tutor report asks about what the objectives of the session in which I helped them are, what study skills were used, and a basic summary of what the student worked on and how I helped them. The reports are electronically saved in the students individual records, which gives their professors and counselors the opportunity to help them do their absolute best academically.
This internship has given me the opportunity to help others, something that makes me feel absolutely great about myself and has also boosted my confidence and communication skills by placing me in a work environment in which I must communicate effectively with the students, my co-tutors, and my supervisors. I'm very excited to see how the semester progresses with this internship and to watch the students grow and improve in more ways than just academically!
